Congratulations on taking the next step toward clean, affordable energy. We’re excited to build your roof-mount solar system in Massachusetts and make this easy from start to finish. Since you’re also having a new roof installed by a third-party roofer, here’s what to expect — what you’ll see in your email and mail, the step-by-step timeline, and what we’ll need from you.
What you’ll see in your inbox & mailbox

- Occasional mailed notices about net-metering or account updates
The process — step by step
1) Kickoff & Coordination (Days 1–7)
- Confirm array layout, attachment zones, and conduit path
- Align solar schedule with roofer’s tear-off and installation dates
2) Engineering & Interconnection (1–2 weeks)
- Stamped electrical plans and structural review for MA wind/snow loads
- Submit National Grid interconnection (usually simplified review)
- You may receive an e-signature request — please sign promptly
3) Permits (1–3 weeks)
- Roofer pulls roofing permit
- Solar installer pulls electrical and building permits
4) Roof Replacement (1–3 days)
- Roofer completes tear-off, repairs decking if needed, installs underlayment and shingles
- Roof must be watertight before solar attachment work begins
5) Solar Attachments & Racking (1–2 days)
- Install flashed attachments (L-feet) directly into rafters
- Mount rails and racking per design
6) Modules, Wiring & Equipment (1–2 days)
- Install modules, run homeruns, set inverter(s), rapid shutdown devices, labeling
7) Inspections (1–7 days)
- Electrical and building final with the town
- Our team attends and resolves any punch-list items
8) Utility Meter Work & PTO (1–3 weeks)
- Submit Certificate of Completion and as-builts
- National Grid performs meter work and issues PTO by email
9) Handoff & Monitoring (same week as PTO)
- Monitoring app setup and training
- First Bill Guide to help read net-metering lines on your bill
- Owner’s Binder with warranties, manuals, drawings, and photos
How this affects your home (and how we minimize it)
- Roofer may stage materials and dumpster on-site; cleanup with magnet sweep afterwards
- Noise and vibration during roofing and solar work
- Solar attachments are flashed and sealed to maintain roof warranty
- Attic access may be needed to confirm rafters or run conduit
- Please keep driveway clear for crew vehicles and deliveries
Your role (simple checklist)
- Email an updated National Grid bill to easyswitchsolar@gmail.com
- Watch for e-signatures from the utility and our install partner Empower Energy Solutions (please sign promptly)
- Share roofer’s confirmed schedule so we can coordinate solar work
- Ensure attic is accessible
- Notify us of HOA requirements or special roof details (chimneys, skylights, snow guards)
- Assure that the utility panel in the garage or basement is accessible and has a 3 foot clear area around it
After you’re live: bills, credits & warranties
- Net Metering: Your digital meter records usage/export; credits appear on your bill and vary by season
- Monitoring: App shows real-time production (billing shows net use, so values differ slightly)
- Warranties: We register solar product warranties and provide a labor warranty; roofer provides separate roof warranty
- Tax Items: We’ll send you a summary for IRS Form 5695 (Residential Clean Energy Credit). Please consult your CPA for eligibility and filing.
Typical timeline (ranges)
- Design, interconnection & permits: 3–6 weeks
- Roofing (by roofer): 1–3 days once scheduled
- Solar installation & inspections: 3–6 days total onsite time (often split across visits)
- Meter work & PTO: 1–3 weeks after inspections
We’re thrilled to get you powered by the sun!
